Racing at the “Little R” kicks off on May 11

Thursday night racing returns to Ransomville Speedway this summer with go-kart action taking place on the 1/4-mile “Little R.”

The go-kart program schedule kicks off on Thursday, May 11 with heats beginning at 7 p.m. Racing will take place nearly every Thursday night through Championship Night on August 31 (exception: the Summer Break night off on Thursday, July 20) and the popular Powder Puff race will take place on Thursday, August 10. Tim Phillips from Tim Phillips Garage will once again sponsor the Senior Light Go-Kart division. His son is a multi-time kart champion at Ransomville and Merrittville, and has several wins with the NYDKS Tour. Friesen prepares for 2017 Truck Series opener at Daytona

Halmar Friesen Racing and driver Stewart Friesen will make their Daytona International Speedway debut in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Friday night, racing in the NextExtra Energy Resources 250. Friesen will pilot the No. 52 Chevrolet Silverado in all twenty-three series events, building on his six starts during the 2016 season. This will be Friesen's first race as driver and co-owner.

The 33-year-old Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON native is a standout on the dirt tracks of New York State. With over 250 victories in both modified and sprint car series, Friesen looks forward to similar success in one of NASCAR’s top-tier national series.

"Competing at Daytona has been a goal of mine since I was young and would watch the Daytona 500 on TV,” said Friesen. “This year a dream becomes reality and I'm very thankful to Chris (Larsen, co-owner) and Tommy (Baldwin, General Manager) for this opportunity. Tommy's knowledge and leadership will be an asset to the HFR team this season."

Friesen will also be racing at nearby Volusia Speedway Park in his No.44 Halmar Racing Team Big Block Modified this week. The Super DIRTcar Series will be in competition Wednesday through Saturday, with Friesen making three of the four events.

Ransomville Speedway to host Sid Jeffery Memorial on August 4, 2017

The Sid Jeffery Memorial for the Sportsman Division will take place Friday, August 4, 2017, as Performance Mfg. Inc. and Jeffery Machine presents the weekly racing program at Ransomville Speedway.

Sid Jeffery was well known in the Ransomville community for many years as he helped out quite a few racers over the years, including Jim Borget, Mike Jeffery and most recently Greg Martin. Sid owned cars from the mid-1980’s through the 1990’s, winning feature races at Genesee Speedway, Tri-County, Perry Raceway, and all three tracks in the Niagara Region, with triumphs at Humberstone, Merrittville and Ransomville with Mike Jeffery behind the wheel. While Mike drove for Sid, he earned the 1988 DIRT Rookie of the Year. Scott Jeffery, current crew chief for Super DIRTcar Series driver Larry Wight and former crew chief for Billy Decker, got his start by turning wrenches on the Mike Jeffery racers.

Sid came back in 2010 to help Greg Martin with his Sportsman career. The duo won the 2014 Ransomville Speedway Sportsman track championship as well as the RUSH Touring Series Sportsman Championships in 2014 and 2015.

The $1,000-to-win special for the Sportsman will be run like a DIRTcar Sportsman Tour race with Group Time Trials and a redraw on the front straightaway. The race will also feature a DIRTcar Touring purse. On the racing card that evening will feature the first-ever visit from the PA Vintage Modifieds. The Krown Undercoating 358 Modifieds, Gippsters Collison 4 Bangers and the Stevenson’s Hardware Novice Sportsman will also be on the racing card.

Humberstone Speedway 2017 schedule coming together

The Humberstone Speedway management team is still finalizing the 2017 schedule, but the season will kick off on Sunday, April 30 at 1 p.m. with the second annual Dawn of Destruction.

“We are still working out the final details, for a couple more big events for this year,” says Humberstone General Manager Bob Davidson. “We hope to release all the details of our 2017 schedule in the coming weeks” Davidson added.

The Dawn of Destruction will kick off with a 100-lap, $1,000-to-win Enduro race that will be broken down into four 25-lap segments; each segment winner will earn $75. Also returning to the Dawn of Destruction are the Construction Crush Off, Ladies Race, Backwards Race, Enduro Cross, Side By Side Chain Race and a few more surprises.

The stock cars will have an open practice session under the lights on Sunday, May 14 with Wednesday, May 17 serving as the rain date, and the season opener is scheduled for Sunday, May 21, with Humberstone introducing its first ever pre-race tailgate party. Full details and a race night schedule for Opening Night 2017 will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS) will return in 2017 with a pair of shows on Sunday, June 4 and Sunday, August 13. The track hosts its inaugural $1,000-to-win Showdown, as Humberstone Speedway will pay all of their regular divisions $1,000 to win on the same night; in addition, one lucky fan in attendance will walk away with $1,000 in their pocket.

The longest running event in the region, the All Canadian Championships, is once again held the Sunday of Civic Holiday Weekend, August 6. The All Canadians qualifying format will see a twist in 2017: the weeks leading up to the event will be used to time trial one division a night. For example, July 30 will feature Sportsman trials to set the heat line ups for The All Canadians. Any cars that do not time trial in these events will be placed behind the time trialed cars for heat line ups on August 6.

Sunday, August 27 will be the third annual Pete Cosco Memorial Night for the Modifieds. Final points night for all classes will be on Labor Day Weekend, Sunday, September 3, followed by a visit from the Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series on Sunday, September 10. The season will come to a close on Sunday, September 17 with the Eve of Destruction at noon.

Humberstone Speedway will once again have RUSH sanctioning for the Late Models. “RUSH is a great organization and we feel and know that the Late Model competitors receive valuable incentives through the RUSH organization and Vicki Emig and Mike Leone and their staff have been wonderful in working with us throughout the years,” said Humberstone Public Relations Director Steven Petty.  

New for 2017, Humberstone Speedway will introduce minivan racing. This bone stock class will be featured in four events in 2017. Lancaster Speedway recognized with awards from

Lancaster National Speedway and Dragway was recognized this week by the motorsports website's annual awards known as "The 51's". 

Lancaster National Speedway Track President Tim Packman received the Promoter of the Year award in just his first season in the position. The facility experienced continued growth in 2016 under Packman's leadership, with additional facility improvements, increased car and fan counts and new events added to the schedule. Packman was chosen out of a group of 20 nominees from around the country. 

The official speedway website ( was selected as the Best Track/Series Website of 2016. Lancaster's internet home was chosen over the websites of some of the biggest short track racing series in the country, including the World of Outlaws, USAC, the Lucas Oil Late Model Series and NASCAR's Home Track website. 

"Being nominated in as many categories as we were was an honor in itself," said Packman. "We were in with some big names and series on that list. These are great victories for Lancaster and we appreciate everybody voting."

Lancaster was also recognized in the Photo of the Year category as a picture of Dave Rigan's crash during the Ol' Boy Cup 60 last June won the award. The photo, taken by Duane Canfield, captured Rigan's Modified in mid-air after impacting the Thermal Foam blocks in Turn 3. The picture is a demonstration of how the expandable polystyrene soft walls produced by Thermal Foams protects Lancaster's drivers in a crash. Rigan was uninjured in the crash. 

In addition, Lancaster National Speedway track announcer Dave Buchanan finished third in the final voting for the Short Track Announcer of the Year category. Buchanan began his announcing career at Lancaster in 1996 when he was 14 years old. It was the first time he was nominated for the honor. 

Several drivers that competed at Lancaster during the 2016 season were nominated in various categories as well. Former track champion Andy Jankowiak won the Best Personality category for his positive attitude, willingness to connect with fans and his colorful social media posts that document his travels on the Modified circuit. 

Lancaster National Speedway and Dragway is busy preparing for the 2017 racing season. The stock car season opener is scheduled for Saturday, April 22. The Franco's Pizza IHRA Drag Racing season begins with test and tune on Friday, April 28 and the first points race is scheduled for Friday, May 5.

Tony Stewart Foundation teams with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports as Indy 500 sponsor

Former Verizon IndyCar Series and three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart is returning to the Indianapolis 500 in 2017 as a car sponsor.

The Tony Stewart Foundation recently announced the formation of Team One Cure to create awareness, enthusiasm and understanding for the Flint Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University that develops cutting-edge cancer treatments for humans and pets. To raise more awareness of the program, Team One Cure will sponsor the entry for the No. 77 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.

Stewart, who retired from NASCAR Cup Series competition following the 2016 season, has long been an advocate for children and animals, especially those facing serious illness.

"We learned that, with the One Cure program, cancer treatment breakthroughs are happening through collaboration between scientists and doctors working with both people and pets," said Stewart, the 1996-97 Verizon IndyCar Series champ. "It perfectly fits with my foundation's missions to help children and animals. Sam Schmidt represents the very best in an injured racer overcoming adversity, plus we share the passion to win at IMS."

Schmidt, a quadriplegic following a testing crash in 2000, has become one of the leading INDYCAR team owners. He also founded Conquer Paralysis Now, a foundation devoted to finding a paralysis cure through increased scientific research.

"Very pleased to be participating in the 101st running of the Indy 500 with such a fantastic program as Team One Cure," said Schmidt. "Tony is the most generous guy I know in motorsports and his charitable efforts on behalf of children and animals in need is unbelievable, so this is a perfect fit. With the team at Colorado State University making such huge strides in cancer research, this will truly be a cause we can get behind. That, combined with both of our extreme desires to win this race, should make for a really competitive entry."

2017 Ransomville Speedway car show taking place March 24-26

Ransomville Speedway management has announced that the annual car show will be held on the weekend of March 24-26 at the Fashion Outlets Niagara Falls USA during regular mall hours.

“We will have representatives from every division from the go-karts right up to the 358 Modifieds,” said  track General Manager Jenn Martin. 

On Saturday night of the car show, there will be an autograph session and the 2017 Miss Ransomville will be crowned.  Any female 18 or older that would like to apply for Miss Ransomville can do so by calling the speedway office at 716-791-3602 or by email at Specific times will be released in the coming weeks for both the autograph session and the Miss Ransomville contest.

Watkins Glen International opens for 2017 season April 8-9

The twists and turns of Watkins Glen International in the Finger Lakes region open for the 2017 season on Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9 with the opportunity to take your personal vehicle on the track.

Visitors can take three paced laps around the track for $25 per vehicle, with proceeds from the experience benefitting the RACE Foundation.

Major racing action gets underway June 23-25 with the SCCA Super Majors Tour, followed by the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen June 29-July 2, featuring the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Mazda Prototype Lites, Porsche GT3 Cup USA and Lamborghini Super Trofeo.

The K&N Pro Series East, Xfinity Series and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series return to The Glen August 3-6, followed by the IndyCar Grand Prix at The Glen August 31-September 3. Rounding out the racing season is the US Vintage Grand Prix September 8-10.

Conte, Richner, Haniszewski take Hangover wins at Ransomville

Richard Conte (4 Cylinders), Kyle Richner (6 Cylinders) and Tyler Haniszewski (8 Cylinders) picked up checkered flags on Saturday, February 4 during the 17th annual Hangover 150 at Ransomville Speedway, presented by Phillips Garage, Relco Trucking, Sevenson’s, Hytech and 

The grandstands were packed and the pits were filled with over 160 entries taking part. Winners of each race received $500, with $200 going to second place and $100 to the third-place finisher.

77 participants took the green flag in the 4 Cylinder feature, with Mike Kramarz leading the way early on. The red flag came out on Lap 7 when Tom Aughtman was involved in a multi-car pileup that blocked the track. Mercy Flight airlifted Aughtman to a local medical facility. Aughtman was alert and talking to medical personnel after getting out of his car with help from the medical staff. On the restart, Kramarz took off, but Frank Nellist took over the lead on Lap 12. Ken Camidge passed Nellist for the lead on Lap 15, holding the lead until being passed by Brad Shepard on Lap 21. Conte passed Shepard on Lap 32, only to have Shepard take the lead back on Lap 36. Conte caught and passed Shepard as the white flag fell, taking the win over Shepard and Ryan Allen.  

45 entries took the green flag in the 50-lap 6 Cylinder feature lead by Sean Dzieranowski. Austin Susice took the lead on Lap 5, with the red flag coming out for a fire underneath the Billy Bleich Jr entry on Lap 15. Following the restart, Susice came to a stop on Lap 19 in turn two, handing the lead to Jeremy Long. Richner took the lead from Long on Lap 22 and didn’t look back, holding on for the win over Brett Senek and Sean Dzieranowski.

Tim Phillips took the early lead in the 30-lap feature for the 8 Cylinders, holding on until Lap 9 when Derrick Borkenhagen took the lead away. Phillips took the lead back later on but it was short lived, as Haniszewski passed Phillips on Lap 14. Phillips caught and passed Haniszewski with three laps to go, but Haniszewski regained the lead when Phillips had issues. Haniszewski picked up the win over Neil Martens and Ryan Susice.

The Hangover 150 officially started the second season of ownership under the Atwal Family and first event for track General Manager Jenn Martin. Graff Trucking adds to Holland’s Pro Modified purse for 2017

With the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency Pro Modifieds returning to Holland International Speedway as the track’s premier division in 2017, drivers can look forward to an added purse payout as Graff Trucking will be adding an extra $150 to the first-place prize money and $100 to the second-place prize on all regular Saturday night races there this year. In addition, Graff Trucking will be giving away one Pro Modified racing tire to a lucky driver on those same event nights.
