James Hinchcliffe and his Schmidt Peterson Racing team went for the finish with a fuel management strategy in the final 25 laps of the Honda Indy Toronto on Sunday. The result was a third-place finish for “the Mayor” in his hometown race, the second podium of the 2016 season for the Arrow Electronics car.
A final caution on Lap 80 proved to be beneficial for the Oakville, Ontario native.
“I was hoping not to screw it up at the end and for once we caught a break in Toronto,” said Hinchcliffe. “That last yellow really helped, but we might have made it without it too.”
Midway through the 85-lap race on the streets of Toronto's Exhibition Place, Hinchcliffe admitted to some struggles. “Guys were throwing elbows at the beginning but we were able to maintain position. On the blacks, with the track temperature going up, we were really struggling.”
Will Power picked up the win at Toronto, with Helio Castroneves joining Power and Hinchcliffe on the podium in second.
The next race on the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule is the Honda Indy in Mid-Ohio on Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m. ET. Keep up with the action at www.indycar.com, and follow Hinchcliffe at www.hinchtown.com.
