Lancaster’s 4-Cylinders gain title sponsor for 2016

Lancaster National Speedway and Dragway has announced that The Roaming Buffalo food truck will be the title sponsor for the 4-Cylinder division on the oval track for the 2016 season. The multiple award-winning food truck is famous for their hamburgers, including their signature "The Dizzle" and W.T.F. burgers.

The 2016 season will be wide open for the Roaming Buffalo 4-Cylinders, as two-time and reigning track champion Rich Bartel of Depew, N.Y. will not be competing full time this season. Last season, Bartel won his second-straight championship on the final night of the regular season by one point over Chris Bugenhagen. Joining a returning Bugenhagen are Chris Pennell, Tim Durfy and Jason Anasiewicz, plus newcomers Jody London, Jamie Woods and Howard Guthrie.

Roaming Buffalo's sponsorship of the 4-Cylinder division is an expansion of their involvement with local short track racing at Lancaster. Owners Christopher and Valerie Taylor were initially involved at the track as a sponsor of Jayme Thompson's No. 54 4-Cylinder and Sportsman cars. With their help, Thompson became one of six female drivers to win a feature race in the 57-year history of Lancaster National Speedway.

Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway has announced that Advance Auto Parts, a leading aftermarket parts provider in North America, has joined its team of marketing partners for the 2016 season. With 30 locations in Western New York, Advance Auto Parts’ logo will be seen all around the facility, with signage on the Dragway tower, in the Stock Car Victory Lane and a billboard facing inside the facility.

As part of the agreement, the track’s Street Stock division on Saturday nights will now be known as the Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks. The Advance Auto Parts Street Stock division currently has more than 20 cars registered for the upcoming season, with returning veterans, drivers moving up from the 4-Cylinder class and new faces coming in from other tracks.

Advance Auto Parts will be the presenting sponsor of the dragstrip’s Sunday Nostalgia Weekend, taking place July 29-31. Tuesday nights will be known as the Advance Auto Parts Test and Tune Tuesdays when the Teen Championships, Jr. Dragsters and the Nostalgia Drags run.

“We are getting back to our grassroots involvement in regards to our marketing programs,” said Greg O’Connor, Regional Vice President. “With all the good that is taking place at Lancaster Speedway right now, we felt it was the perfect time to make their race teams and fans part of our fans and team. The day began with a pair of invitational events for two of Humberstone’s weekly divisions, the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman and the JC Auto Street Stocks. Hinchcliffe continues to improve with sixth-place finish in Alabama

James Hinchcliffe picked up a season's-best sixth-place finish
at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama Sunday
credit: Patagonia Visual Solutions
Oakville, Ontario native James Hinchcliffe continues his uphill climb in the Verizon IndyCar Series, finishing sixth in the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama on Sunday. Simon Pagenaud won his second-straight race, and was joined on the podium by Graham Rahal (second) and 2015 winner Josef Newgarden (third).

Two of the day’s biggest stories were running the entire 90-lap race without a yellow caution flag and the impressive run of veteran racer Juan Pablo Montoya, who started 21st on the field and finished fifth.

Hinchcliffe believed that tire selection was critical given the mid-80s temperatures in Alabama.

“The challenge for both drivers and their engineers was to get the settings right for the tires,” he said. Hinchcliffe’s No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry began the race on blacks, then moved up early in the race after a 5.8-second pit stop to go to sticky red Firestone tires. The quick stop moved Hinchcliffe from eighth to sixth.

“It was a solid day. We were able to move up a couple of spots, which was obviously good,” he said. “I think we struggled a little bit more than others with tire degradation and so that forced us to stop early a couple of times, which means we were saving a bit of fuel on those runs. All in all, the No. 5 Arrow Electronics car was really quick, maybe just a little rough on tires but it’s good that two weekends in a row we’ve come out with strong finishes and hopefully we can keep this momentum going through the month of May.”

The next race on the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule is the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, taking place Saturday, May 14 on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Keep up with the action at www.indycar.com, and follow Hinchcliffe at www.hinchtown.com.

Lancaster Dragway moves Test & Tune to Tuesday, May 3

credit: Lancaster National Speedway and Dragway
Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway has moved its previously-scheduled Test and Tune session from Friday, April 29 for Drag teams to next Tuesday, May 3.

“Wet weather and cold conditions this week have not allowed enough time to properly prep the new concrete surface of the Dragstrip,” said Tim Packman, Track President. “With all that was put into this improvement, we do not feel it would be beneficial to have the Drag teams take to the track until is properly ready.”

“Moving it to next week gives the track crew enough days to get on there and drag more rubber to make a better – and safer – Dragstrip. Some of the prep has already begun, but we need to do things correctly and properly to start the season out on a good note so it carries through the rest of the year. I would like to personally thank the Drag teams in advance for their understanding and we look forward to seeing them here on Tuesday, May 3.”

On Tuesday, May 3, back gates will open at 4 p.m. with Pre-Tech starting at 5 p.m. and Test and Tune scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. For spectators, grandstand admission will be $5 and an all access pit pass will be $10.

Stock Car action for Saturday, April 30 is still set for 2 p.m. Admission will be $12 at the front gate for adults, $8 for kids 12 to 17 and free for kids 11 and under. On the card are the Sunoco Sportsman, Advance Auto Street Stocks, RoC Super Stocks and the Roaming Buffalo 4 Cylinders.

Tommy Baldwin Racing to honor Kulwicki at Darlington

credit: 140 Buzz for TBR
Darlington Raceway’s throwback event proved so popular last year that the theme is coming back this season as well in the Sprint Cup Series. Tommy Baldwin Racing's No. 7 Chevrolet will be involved in the throwback, paying tribute to 1992 Cup Series champion Alan Kulwicki on Labor Day weekend in September. The No.7 Road Rippers/Toy State design echoes the paint scheme Kulwicki drove to three of his five career wins.

"It is a neat deal for me, I grew up watching him, Davey (Allison) and Bill (Elliott) battle it out for the '92 championship,” said TBR driver Regan Smith, winner of the 2011 Southern 500 at Darlington. “I am really looking forward to getting the No. 7 Road Rippers/Toy State Chevrolet on track Labor Day weekend."

"We're proud to be part of such a unique promotion that helps connect fans to the history of NASCAR," said Toy State President, Andy Friess. "It's a privilege to recognize Alan Kulwicki as a champion, and as a man admired by so many, both inside and outside of the sport."

"It's an honor for us to pay tribute to a true champion of our sport," said team owner Tommy Baldwin. "Sharing the car number is a great way to celebrate his accomplishments, it is even more special because Alan achieved success as an independent team. We're grateful to Darlington Raceway and NASCAR for giving us such a special platform."

Hinchcliffe eighth at Long Beach

Hinchcliffe shares a laugh with Josef Newgarden in Long Beach
credit: IndyCar Media/Chris Owens
James Hinchcliffe continues to improve each race weekend, this time finishing eighth at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in California. The race was won by Simon Pagenaud, who bested 2015 winner Scott Dixon, while pole sitter Helio Castroneves finished third.

Ontario native Hinchcliffe battled Will Power for much of the race, and later expressed his disappointment that the race – 80 laps on a just-under two-mile course – wasn’t longer. “It was barely a two-stopper and we need a genuine three-stopper so we can go racing,” said Hinchcliffe, who qualified seventh. “We seriously need to look at the length of the races.”

“It’s been a bittersweet day really,” he continued. “It was nice to come away with a top-10 and we had a good first stint, stayed out of trouble and kept up with the guys in front of us. On the first pit sequence, we sort of got bad timing and just as we had finished our stop and were about to be released, we had to hold for a bit because (Carlos) Munoz was entering his box. This ultimately cost us getting out and Takuma Sato was able to jump us in the stops and that really what differentiated us; he had that little bit better track position, stayed in front of the guys in the next round of stops and came away with a top-5. I think we had his pace, definitely had more pace than the guys ahead of us right at the end, we just didn’t have the opportunity to get around them.”

The next race for the Verizon IndyCar Series is the Honda Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham next weekend, April 22-24. Keep up with the action at www.indycar.com, and follow Hinchcliffe at www.hinchtown.com.

National weekend wrap-up: April 15-17, 2016

Sprint Cup Series – His Joe Gibbs Racing teammates all had problems, but Carl Edwards was the class of the field Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway, leading 276 of 500 laps on this way to the checkered flag in the Food City 500. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second, followed by Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne. Beside Tennessee native Bayne, who earned his first top-five finish since winning the Daytona 500 in 2011, the story of the race was the emotional sixth-place finish by Matt DiBenedetto in the No. 83 for BK Racing.

Xfinity Series – Erik Jones held off his JGR teammate and mentor Kyle Busch to win Saturday’s Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 at Bristol and also take home the Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash bonus. Busch was runner-up, followed by Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon and Justin Allgaier.

Verizon IndyCar Series – Team Penkse driver Simon Pagenaud kept Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon from the checkered flag Sunday in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in California. Pagenaud’s Penske teammates Helio Castroneves – who start on the pole – and Juan Pablo Montoya finished third and fourth, respectively, followed by A.J. Foyt Racing’s Takuma Sato in fifth.

Improvements at Lancaster postpone openers until April 29-30

credit: Lancaster National Speedway and Dragway
Lancaster National Speedway and Dragway will begin improvements to their dragstrip, oval, pit areas and other parts of the facility beginning Monday, April 18. These improvements will once again postpone the season openers until Friday, April 29 for the dragstrip and Saturday, April 30 for the stock car program.

Included in the plans is a concrete resurfacing of the dragstrip; it will be the first time in track history that the dragstrip, which also doubles as the frontstretch of the stock car oval, will be concrete. Capital improvement plans also include repaving sections of the stock car oval; this round of upgrades includes sections in between Turns 3 and 4 and a smaller area in Turn 1. Two larger areas of the Stock Car Pits are being paved, as well.

There will also be improvements to the lighting and wiring around the track, Main Concession stands and other overall upgrades to the facility.

A milling machine and other equipment arrived at the track Friday morning to ensure Monday’s start date. They were delivered by one of our current partners, Mallare Enterprises, via their fleet of truck equipment.

“I can’t even begin to fathom what a huge move forward this is for Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway, there are a lot of people involved with this track who are very happy right now,” said Tim Packman, Track President. “The ownership group saw how the race teams and fans responded to improvements that were made last year, so they deserve a lot of the credit for showing them the investment is worthwhile.”

“Those results and the anticipation surrounding this year also factored in deciding what improvements needed to be made. Unfortunately, we have to move the Opening Weekend back to April 29 and 30 to let the racing surfaces set properly and be readied for the Drag and Stock Car programs. I’m fairly confident our race teams and fans will understand and be even more appreciative when we start racing. This is a great time for Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway.”

Contracts were awarded to Surianello Concrete and Tom Greenauer Development for the track resurfacing with all supplies and labor being WNY related.

The Franco’s Pizza Friday Night IHRA Drag Racing program will kick off its season Friday, April 29 with Mallare Enterprises Top ET, McGard Mod ET, Tread City Tire Street and Hebeler’s Sales Sleds & Bikes. Gates will open at 3 p.m. with Time Trials starting at 5 p.m. and $5 admission for the grandstands.

The 57th season of stock car racing will now begin on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. with the Queen City Clash featuring the Sunoco Sportsman, Big 10 Super Stocks, Street Stocks and 4-Cylinders.
Because of the delay in opening, Pack the Track with $5 admission for all adults is now moved to Saturday, May 7. That day will now be Pack the Track and Walk the Track with a start time of 2 p.m., as well.

Cruise Night at Lancaster starts on Wednesday, May 4 with FREE admission.

Aasbo begins title defense with second-place finish in Long Beach

2015 Formula Drift champ Fredric Aasbo picked up a podium finish on the Streets of Long Beach on Saturday, finishing second in spite of unpredictable conditions in the rainy Formula Drift season opener.

"This is where we want to be right now as we start our championship defense," said Aasbo. "To be on the podium in the first round is a great start to the year."

Conditions caused organizers to cancel qualifying and assign a seeded start for Saturday's competition, putting Aasbo in the No. 1 qualifying spot against a series rookie in the 32nd position during Saturday’s opening round.

"With conditions the way they were, Fredric did a great job behind the wheel to achieve our first podium of the year," said team owner Stephan Papadakis. "But I especially want to thank our crew for pushing through a challenging weekend to keep the car dialed in for this result."

"It was a wild event," said Aasbo. “It went from rain, to dry, to rain, to dry again and you never knew what you were facing. Getting the perfect setup was impossible and it's a credit to the expertise of the Papadakis Racing team that we were able to find a great compromise that got us through the course with style every time."

In Final Four competition, Aasbo faced Odi Bakchis in a match that judges deemed too close to call, prompting a "one more time" battle. Aasbo took the re-run to advance to the final round, where he faced eventual winner Chelsea DeNofa.

Aasbo’s SR by Toyota and Nexen Tire teammate Ken Gushi finished third, giving the automaker and tire maker the lead in their respective points chases after the first round on the eight-stop schedule.

"Long Beach is our home event and it's fantastic to start our season here in the company of our family and friends, including Rockstar Energy Drink, Nexen Tires and SR by Toyota," said Papadakis. "It was great to see so many enthusiastic fans out here supporting us in the rain."

The team returns to the street course in Long Beach next weekend for the Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge invitational Friday and Saturday nights during the Long Beach Grand Prix IndyCar weekend. The second round of the 2016 Formula Drift Championship takes place May 6-7 at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia.

Lancaster postpones season openers

credit: Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway
Since Mother Nature hasn’t been cooperating, Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway has not been able to make needed capital improvements to their facility, and will have to postpone its opening weekend schedule.

The Race of Champions Modified Series race scheduled for Sunday, April 17 is now scheduled for Saturday, May 21. All divisions previously scheduled for that night – Sunoco Sportsman, Street Stocks, NYPA TQ Midgets and 4 Cylinders – will remain on the race card. The Ladies Night promotion featuring admission of $5 will be rescheduled for later in the year.

“With the way the weather has been the past two weeks, we have not had the break needed to get into the track and make the capital improvements properly,” said track president Tim Packman. “For the safety of the teams and fans, we have been forced to postpone our opening weekend activities. The weather looks to be turning towards our favor later this week to hopefully get started on the improvements, so that’s a good thing.”

“We are not going to have a Test and Tune for the Drag teams or a race for the Stock Car teams just to have one,” he continued. “We need to get the track improvements done properly and not rush through them. I hate this more than anyone because there has been a lot of anticipation for racing activities at our track this year. We have to play the cards that Mother Nature deals us, but that just means we’ll be better prepared for when we do open.”

With the extra time, track management is looking to have a Tech Inspection for the Drag Teams and Safety Check for the Stock Car teams at the facility. Stay tuned for a future announcement for when that will take place.

The 2016 season at Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway is now scheduled to open the weekend of April 23-24. The stock cars will kick off their season on Saturday, April 23 at 2 p.m. with the Sunoco Sportsman, Late Models, Street Stocks and 4-Cylinders. The Dragway opener is scheduled for Sunday, April 24 with a Test & Tune session and a Box/No-Box Shootout.

Aasbo, Papadakis Racing prepared to kick off title defense in Formula Drift

Fredric Aasbo on track Tuesday in Long Beach
credit: Larry Chen/SR by Toyota
Papadakis Racing and 2015 Formula Drift champ Fredric Aasbo are set to begin their title defense this weekend, Friday and Saturday, April 8-9 with the opening round of the 2016 season on the Streets of Long Beach.

Returning partners Rockstar Energy Drink and SR by Toyota are joined by Nexen Tire. The tire manufacturer adds a flash of purple to the familiar yellow, black and gray livery on the Rockstar Energy Drink/Nexen Tire SR by Toyota tC.

Aasbo, a native of Ski, Norway, won last year’s opener at Long Beach, the first of four wins on his way to winning the Formula Drift Pro and Formula Drift World titles.

"Winning the Formula Drift championship last season was a 10-year dream come true," said Aasbo, who returns for a sixth season at Papadakis Racing. "Now, the goal is to keep pushing, learning, and battling to make a repeat. We have a lot left to accomplish."

Team owner Stephan Papadakis is confident the team will again be a contender this season. An off-season development program has created power gains and the vehicle now produces 1,000-plus horsepower.

"We can't wait to defend our title," said Papadakis. "We're thrilled to have excellent partners including SR by Toyota and Rockstar Energy Drink returning with us this year, as well as a new relationship with Nexen Tire. It has been a great off-season and we're ready for competition to begin at our home track in Long Beach."

Aasbo and Papadakis Racing are also scheduled to return to the Streets of Long Beach during the following Grand Prix weekend for the invitation-only Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge. Motegi Racing is a longtime supporter of the team and the Rockstar Energy Drink/Nexen Tire SR by Toyota tC will debut the new Technomesh Drift wheel in competition this season.

The traditional Formula Drift calendar expands to eight rounds this year, with the addition of a Canadian event at Autodrome St. Eustache in July. Aasbo won the Formula Drift competition in Montreal last season on his way to a World Championship victory.

2016 Formula Drift schedule
  • Streets of Long Beach – April 8-9
